My Computer

My computer is currently not operating all that well, so no pictures

for now. I have just been so busy, and I haven't really had too much

to write about. Lynnette and I finished our box and I will post those

How would u react if u come across an article with title SO LONG, AND

THANKS FOR THE PH.D.!.

Here is a partial text from the so called "So long, and thanks for the

Ph.D.!" a.k.a. "Everything I wanted toknow about C.S. graduate school

at the beginning but didn't learn until later."

The author touches many a thing in this article.

He first talks abt the necessity of a ph.D.

He says that

"Being a graduate student is like becoming all of the Seven Dwarves.

In the beginning you're Dopey and Bashful. In the middle, you are

usually sick (Sneezy), tired (Sleepy), and irritable (Grumpy). But at

the end, they call you Doc, and then you're Happy."

and calls Academia as a business and Graduate school as a different

ballgame.

He discusses the traits of successful Ph.D. students which include

* Initiative

* Tenacity

* Flexibility

* Interpersonal skills

* Organizational skills

* Communications skills

* Choosing an adviser and a committee

* Balance and Perspective

* job hunt

Here are some anecdotes from the article

"Technical skills, intelligence and creativity are certainly strong

factors for success in graduate school. For example, I doubt there

is a C.S. graduate student who didn't at one point wish he or she

had a stronger mathematical background. However, it's beyond the

scope of this guide to tell you how to be technically brilliant, as

the following joke implies:

You don't have to be a genius to do well in graduate school. You

must be reasonably intelligent, but after a certain point, I think

other traits become more important in determining success."

"Academia is a business, and "graduate student" is a job title.

This is especially true at private universities. Academia is very

peculiar type of business. It is certainly not the Real World and

does not work in the same way that the ordinary corporate world

does. However, it is a business nonetheless and as a graduate

student, you must treat it that way. Graduate school made a lot

more sense and became much easier for me after I realized this. If

you think of graduate school as an "Ivory Tower" free of politics,

money problems, and real-world concerns, you are going to be

severely disappointed. If you don't believe me, read The Idea

Factory by Pepper White (listed in the references) for one account

of graduate life at MIT."

"At UNC, there is a famous anecdote about a former UNC graduate

student named Joe Capowski. Many years ago, UNC got a

force-feedback mechanical arm to use with molecular visualization

and docking experiments. The problem was how to move it to UNC.

This mechanical arm is a large, heavy beast, and it was in Argonne

National Labs in Chicago, IL. Unfortunately, there was a trucker's

strike going on at the time. Joe Capowski, on his own initiative

(and without telling anyone), flew out to Argonne, rented a car,

drove the mechanical arm all the way back to North Carolina, and

then handed the computer science department the bill! Many years

later, Joe Capowski ran for the Chapel Hill city council and won a

seat. Prof. Fred Brooks gave him an endorsement. I still remember

the words Dr. Brooks said: "I may not agree with his politics, but

Toward Biological Computers

I wrote about biological-based computers in my book, Quantum

Investing. Seems like researchers at Technion have made some

remarkable advances recently.

"Technion scientists have developed a biological computer, composed

entirely of DNA molecules and enzymes constructed on a gold-coated

chip. This new computer represents a significant improvement over the

original computer reported three years ago in a joint paper by Prof.

Ehud Keinan of the Technion and a group from the Weizmann Institute of

Science, which included Yaakov Benenson, Prof. Ehud Shapiro and Prof.

Zvi Livneh. The Technion researchers succeeded in increasing the level

of complexity of their computer. Whereas the original computer could

accept up to 765 different programs, the new computer can accept as

many as 1 billion programs. This increase represents a dramatic

advance in terms of the potential mathematical operations and

complexity of problems that may be solved using a biological computer.

The results are published this week in the Journal of the American

Chemical Society."

I have little doubt that the Microsofts and Intels of the future will

have biological roots in their technologies. Those that don't simply

won't be around for very long.

Printing in the 21st Century

Speaking of self-replication...

"A self-replicating 3D printer that spawns new, improved versions of

itself is in development at the University of Bath in the UK. The

'self

replicating rapid prototyper' or RepRap could vastly reduce the cost

of

3Dprinters, paving the way for a future where broken objects and spare

parts are simply 're-printed' at home. New and unique objects could

also

be created. 3D printing - also known as 'rapid prototyping' -

transforms a

blueprint on a computer into a real object by building up a succession

of layers. The material is bonded by either fusing it with a laser or

by

using alternating layers of glue."

Sounds like science fiction doesn't it? Then again, we are in the 21st

Century folks!

Meet the New Ma Bell

Folks that work with me regularly know that I'm a huge fan of a

revolutionary communications company called Skype. For years, I've

been telling anybody that would listen that the communications

industry would experience a gale of creative destruction as the

Internet and World Wide Web evolved.

While it may seem that the communications industry already has been

disrupted by new technologies, in reality the wave of creative

destruction has just begun. Skype is one of the companies that has

potential to relegate many of incumbent operators to the telecom

graveyard.

The Luxembourg-based startup has so far signed up 29 million

registered users for its free Net phone calling software--a unique

version of voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP--making it one of the

fastest-growing services on the Net. Now the company aims to generate

profits by offering paid services that promise to make its Net-only

product significantly more useful to consumers--and potentially more

lethal to traditional phone providers.

Last week, Skype quietly unveiled test versions of two new paid

products--voice mail and a service dubbed SkypeIn that lets

subscribers obtain ordinary telephone numbers. SkypeIn represents a

potential watershed, since it will enable Skype subscribers for the

first time to receive incoming calls from the hundreds of millions of

people who still use traditional phone services. Additionally, Skype

is working with equipment makers to develop hardware that will connect

conventional phones to its free software and paid services. German

giant Siemens, for one, has already released a Skype adapter for

cordless phones in Europe. New devices are expected soon in the United

States, from companies including Vtech and iMate, that will let people

make Skype calls using an ordinary handset, rather than a PC.

Needless to say, Skype's efforts to bridge the Internet and the

traditional phone network could pose a major headache for traditional

phone companies and other VoIP upstarts alike in the months ahead.

Beyond Price Competition

Many security analysts on Wall Street are fond of focusing on price

competition when analyzing companies and industries. While it is

useful to think about prices, Schumpeter believed that the competition

that really matters in not price competition among a large number of

firms producing a homogeneous product. Rather, it is:

"the competition form the new commodity, the new technology, the new

source of supply, the new type of organization -- competition which

commands a decisive cost or quality advantage and which strikes not at

the margins of the profits and the outputs of the existing firms but

at their foundations and their very lives."

The nanotechnology revolution will usher in an entirely new way of

manufacturing products -- one that will envolve creating new products

molecule by molecule using self assembly techniques that have never

existed before. Schumpeter's thoughts on the kind of competition that

drives the capitalist process should be kept in mind as the

nanotechnology revolution accelerates.

Welcome

In my book, Quantum Investing, I noted that as the pace of

technological innovation continues to accelerate, there would be an

enormous amount of what economist Joseph Schumpeter called creative

destruction in the global economy. The nanotechnology revolution is

still in an early stage of evolution, but I believe it has the

potential to bring about a gale of creative destruction during the

next decade and beyond. Other quantum-based technologies will also

play an important role in altering the business landscape. This

setting up and using Wordpress and I think I'm doing fine, hehe!�

12th day filipiniananets blog and



12th Day: Filipiniana.net's blog and other stuff...

I continued what I have started yesterday. I still can't figure out

how to integrate JavaScript and PHP. This afternoon, I was asked to

look at Filipiniana.net's blog and find out why it's not compatible

with Internet Explorer. Luckily, I found the error. The webpages use

an external JavaScript and CSS file. The error is that this webpages

points to the wrong directory. Another error is in the the JavaScript

file. This error causes the pictures to not display properly. I also

have corrected this and the blog is now ok.�

annoying taking it around and worrying about dripping it etc. The

solution is pretty simple. Invest in a Laptop Computer Backpack. It is

a simple investment; after all, it's just a backpack. But, it makes

having a laptop so much nicer. You can take it with you everywhere you

go and have everything you need with it to. The only dilemma is what

laptop computer backpack is right for you? Well, I present the 5 main

considerations when picking the computer bag that is right for you.

1) Find a backpack that fits your bag snugly. You don't need to see it

to make sure it works, but you definitely don't want to have your 12

inch laptop in a backpack that is designed for a 17 inch backpack.

Most bags and backpacks designed for laptop computers will have some

kind of foam or outer protection for the laptop. Both of these will

keep your computer from bouncing around.

2) Make sure that the style of the bag fits your lifestyle. My first

bag for my laptop was a leather briefcase. I made sure that I got a

nice one and it did the job pretty well. But I found that if I had to

walk a distance with my briefcase that it was kind of annoying and

made me walk weird with all of that weight on one side. But, I just

recently got my pick from a list of laptop computer backpacks and I

love it. No more walking weird, I don't not want to bring my laptop

anywhere. It is actually really comfortable. It is want I want. Make

sure that you backpack fits your lifestyle. If you ride your bike to

work, a bag without shoulder-straps would obviously have limitations.

If you are a businessman and want to always look professional, maybe

my briefcase would be a better choice. Just make sure that it works

for you.

3) Find a look that is right for you. Many business women, for

example, don't want to be seen carrying a big briefcase that looks

like it was built for men. They would probably prefer looking for

women's laptop cases. You would actually be pretty surprised at how

nice some of these bags look. A far cry from the standard black laptop

computer briefcase.

4) Find a good price. Shop around and make sure that you're getting

what you want, for the price you want. Obviously nice backpacks, bags,

or briefcases are going to be nicer and more expensive. But you

shouldn't be spending hundreds of dollars for the laptop computer

backpack that you want.

5) Find a good brand. A lot of the trendy women's laptop cases aren't

going to be offered by the big brands. But, you can usually trust

those. But for your standard laptop computer backpacks, stick with the

brands that you've heard of (such as Targus, or Ogio). They have a

good name for a reason. Or do your research and make sure you know

what you're getting.

Laptop Computer Backpacks can be a cheap, but great investment. It

will change the relationship that you have with your laptop computer.
