Computer Processors

The next chapter in the battle to build a faster computer is

beginning. The major players in this fight are Intel and AMD and for

most of the time, AMD has been trailing in this race. Their plan for

the release of their next processor, the Barcelona Core, may give them

back the lead. The CPU is rumored to beat Intel's Clovertown by about

40% at any clock speed, with a 50% advantage in floating point

applications and 20% in integer performance. Intel is not sitting by

quitetly. They have released specs on their new 45nm Penryn Core 2 CPU

HEXUS. Intel has also devised a new supercomputer, the Blue Gene, that

can max out at 280 trillion operations a second during continuous
