10 Tips to Prepairing for a Computer Repair Visit

Successful Computer Repair!

Making a Computer Repair Visit Successful:

My visits to clients homes or offices to repair computers is often

surprising. Recently, I went to a job site and when I got there the

person needing computer services didn't even have the courtesy to have

the computer ready for repair work. The computer space was cluttered

with candy rappers, pencils, various papers, dirt and dust and other

things that I could not describe. I thought... to think.. they don't

care enough for themselves or me to make it easy for repair. I could

feel the irritation in my mind as I started moving away all the crap

to get to a keyboard and mouse. I had to mentally step back and take a

breath before moving forward to discover the issues with the computer.

After this experience, I decided to list steps needed to make it easy

for a computer consultant to do his or her job. After all, the extra

time it take to get ready to look at a computer costs the client

money, right? Why not have the space ready before the computer

specialist arrives.

Here are the 10 steps:

1) Make sure the workspace is clean of clutter.

2) Make sure all video cables, power cords and accessory cables are

untangled and tied together in the right combination. Using "zip ties"

makes it easy.

3) Make sure there is enough surrounding space for the computer

specialist to work.

4) Have a chair ready, if needed.

5) Make sure there is ample lighting within the room.

6) Have all DSL installation boxes and print materials placed in a

location for easy access by the computer specialist.

7) Have all software and and hardware boxes available, including the

print material for easy access to the computer repair person.

8) Create a "wish list" of things that you would like to have done the

day of the visit. Also, include a long term and short term needs list

of future computer wants and desires. Note the type of things you do

with a computer. Add this things you wish you could do.

9) Let the computer specialist know that you have either a pirated

version of the operating system or an authorized version of the

operating system. [it does matter]

10) Let the computer specialist know if you want to have a website

built and need assistance. These specialist often have very good

resources for these services and can guide you thru the process.

Extra Tip:

[LOOK OUT FOR COMPUTER SCAMMERS]

Ask the computer specialist lots of questions and get a feel for his

or her experience. Don't forget to ask for a business card and be sure

to write down his or her license plate number when they need to take

the computer for shop repair. [there are scams going on in the

computer world. You might be giving your computer to a "Non-Computer

Specialist". Its best to be safe! You may choose to take a digital

picture of the repair person. Act as if you are excited about their

work and that you want to capture the moment with a photo. If they act

weird... the flags can go up and you will may be tipped off to a
